Thousands of Twitter employees have made a beeline for the exits hours after new "Chief Twit" Elon Musk issued an "extremely hardcore" ultimatum to work hard or get out, according to multiple Thursday night reports. The social media company has disabled badge access and closed its brick-and-mortar spaces for at least the next 72 hours.
After Musk wrote an internal email to Twitter staff early Wednesday morning advising them to get ready for "long hours at hard intensity" in order to construct "Twitter 2.0," things quickly descended into pandemonium. Musk gave employees until 5 p.m. Eastern time to declare whether they planned to stay or leave on a business Google form. According to Fortune reporter Kylie Robison, by the time the deadline arrived, up to three-quarters of the remaining staff had submitted their resignations.
According to Fortune reporter Kylie Robison, by the time the deadline arrived, up to three-quarters of the surviving staff had submitted their resignations. According to Alex Heath of The Verge, it's unknown how many employees survived Musk's call earlier this month and decided not to resign in the days that followed, but estimates peaked at around 3,000 right before the deadline.
According to Heath, a number of "important" engineering teams submitted their resignations in full on Thursday. One current engineer told him, referring to one of the teams, "You cannot run Twitter without this team."
Musk tweeted out what appeared to be a response to the chaos just before 8:30 p.m. He asked, "How can you make a small fortune on social media?"
"Start out with a small one."
