As Elon Musk cracks down on internal and external dissent, what started as the termination of two long-serving Twitter Inc. engineers after they insulted their new boss has evolved into a purge.
According to two people with knowledge of the situation, a dozen or more employees have been let off in the last 24 hours after publicly criticizing Musk, who has referred to himself as a "free speech absolutist." Employees have been keeping an eye on the situation through public tweets and private chats, even though Musk and Twitter haven't verified the firings.
In one instance, Musk tweeted the news of a firing. On Sunday, Musk's tweet was reposted with a response from engineer Eric Frohnhoefer, who works on Twitter's Android app, stating that Musk's knowledge of a technical aspect of the program was "incorrect." Twitter is really sluggish on Android, Musk said in response, before asking Frohnhoefer for more details. How have you addressed that?
Frohnhoefer attempted to articulate his thoughts in a number of tweets, but one person questioned him as to why he hadn't privately given his new boss his opinion. The more than eight-year engineer at Twitter retorted, "Perhaps he should ask questions privately. Use email or Slack, if possible.
