You'll be able to block artists on Spotify soon.

 


Yes, it is finally taking place. Users will be able to blacklist any artist on the platform using a new function that Spotify appears to be developing for its app. The block option, which would let you ban songs from an artist on automatically curated playlists like Discover Weekly, your Daily Mixes, as well as things like global charts, is a much-requested feature from Spotify users.

The Spotify app will soon feature the ability to restrict songs from any artist you don't like. This implies that it will prevent you from hearing any music by that artist on any of your playlists, radios, charts, or other media. Even if you wanted to, you won't be able to manually play music from a blocked artist because you'd need to unlock them in order to listen to a particular track from them. Blocking an artist does not prevent them from appearing on tracks, though. If you don't like the music of popular musicians and have to constantly scroll through their tracks on public playlists, algorithm-generated playlists, and global charts, the function will be really helpful.

You can stop playing music from an artist by clicking "Don't play this artist" under the new feature, which is accessible from the "..." menu on their artist page.

Spotify continues to say that blocking an artist “isn’t possible right now” as of yesterday. The company said back in 2017 that it has decided against offering a block button for artists after “serious” consideration. And it seems like that’s not the case anymore.

The new block button for artists still seems limited to a small number of users. I happen to be part of Spotify’s beta program on iOS, and thus I have access to the new feature, as well as a slightly tweaked design for artists' pages. The new feature does not seem to be available on other platforms, including Spotify on the desktop and web.

The function appears to have been tested for a few months with a smaller set of users, but if you use iOS, you will probably get it soon because the company only started pushing it out to more people last week.
